"The Big House"
When they are not living on their sailboat "Betty Boop 2", John's parents stay at John's Gran-Gran's old house. It is otherwise known to the family as "the big house". It has 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, study room, pool room, etc. etc. I think it's a total of 8,000 square feet or something like that. There's a pool and tennis courts in the back and a little rose garden with fountain and a couple of gazebos with a barn in the back with lots of empty land behind the house. Sounds like something from the movies, right?
Well, let me just say, it has lots of potential but it hasn't been updated since the 1970s. The paint on the columns in the front is crusting off and there's some Each room is named by its color. The color of the bedrooms comes from the color of the carpet. Big thick colored carpet that has faded in places. There's a red room (with orange carpet b/c of fading), blue room (with purple carpet where furniture stayed for years and it's turned purple), green room, purple room, etc. The bathrooms have rugs and fuzzy toilet covers that coordinate with the room. The tile in the bathroom is color coordinated also. It's pretty funny but it was popular in the 70s. My sister calls it the Brady Bunch house. The kitchen's wall paper is pretty funny too! It just hasn't been updated but it's a great place for a lot of people.....and a LOT of people came to stay with John's parents, Troy and Betty, for the Christmas Holidays.
All of Memaw's kids were there with their kids and the great-grandchildren were there. It was hard to take a family photo with everybody looking and smiling, but I thought we did pretty good. Ava was the only one turning her head. Oh well. I also tried to get everyone at dinner in the picture but I had to take a couple of shots. Here are some photos of this Christmas with the Thompsons:
